Course FAQ

What does the course cost?

The total cost for the course is $110.00 for registered Scout leaders & youth 15 or older.  This fee covers all program costs, food, lodging, and certifications.

Is this a youth or adult training course?

While youth are encouraged to attend, the focus of this course is geared more towards adult leadership.  We traditionally have about 5 youth students in every course, and they have always enjoyed their experience.  However, please be aware that as a youth you may be the only person of your age taking the course.

Where will we sleep?

All participants will be housed in camp cabins.  There will be separate accommodations for male and female participants.  There are areas for individuals to pitch their own tent if you desire.  After all, a cabin full of snoring adults can get rather noisy!

Do I need to bring food?

All meals will be provided as part of the course fee.  This includes a Friday night dinner and snack, three meals on Saturday with an evening snack, and Sunday breakfast.  If you have specific dietary requests or constrictions please contact the course director.

Are we going to be sitting around all day?

The curriculum consist of a balance between in-class lectures and hands-on skills.  Participants will have ample opportunity to practice the unique skills that  this program teaches in conjunction with the classroom lectures.  While the classroom portion is a vital part of the learning process, it is only part of the equation.  A great deal of the course will consist of “real-life” practice scenarios where participants learn what it is really like to care for the sick and injured in remote locations.  Students should come prepared to take notes and learn, and they should be prepared to throw on their backpacks at a moment’s notice and rush to the aid of a person in need.

So we will be outside too?

Many of the activities will be outdoors – dress for the weather. Also, wear old clothing as the scenarios will be made to be as realistic as possible. Personal gear is needed.  All meals and lodging are provided.

Is there a test?

Yes.  At the end of the course you must pass a written exam to obtain your certification.   Additionally, your performance in the practice scenarios will be graded on a pass/fail basis.

What certification will I receive?

At the successful completion of the course participants will receive Adult CPR/AED certification (good for 2 years) and Wilderness First Aid certification (good for 3 years) from ECSI.

ECSI? What’s that?

The Emergency Care and Safety Institute is a nationally recognized training organization. for medical professionals.  The ECSI is a collaborative effort between the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS) and the he American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP) than began in 1972, when the AAOS pioneered EMS education by publishing Emergency Care and Transportation of the Sick and Injured, the first EMS training program available.  At this time the ECSI is one of ONLY two organizations that are specifically endorsed and partnered with The Boy Scouts of America to provide WFA training.  The ECSI was recently spotlighted at the 2010 National Scout Jamboree.

Does the course have any other affiliations?

Yes.  The course director is also an American Red Cross instructor and course textbook is accredited by the Wilderness Medical Society.
